‘Connecting Heung Che’ is part of MILL6’s Community Engagement and Learning program, in collaboration with The Hong Kong Research Institute of Textiles and Apparel (HKRITA) in Heung Che Street Market, Tsuen Wan. Supported by science and technology, we have developed custom-made aprons that cater to the different needs of wet market storekeepers and collected many stories at the neighborhood during the process.

HKRITA deploys advanced technology to combine four functions - waterproof, greaseproof, stain-free and wrinkle-free - on a fabric with self-cleaning treatment. MILL6 Team work together with shopkeepers in the market to understand their needs to this alterative, or almighty, apron.

Timeline

Phase 1: Data collection (March- April)

  • Floor plan of Heung Che Street Market
  • First encounter and interview shopkeepers
  • First draft of apron

Phase 2: Design & production (May)

  • Co-design the apron details with shopkeepers
  • Fabric testing and adjustment
  • Finalize the prototype pattern

Phase 3: Check-point (June)

  • Try on
  • Fabric examination and adjustment
  • Revise the prototype pattern

Phase 4: Final examination & production (July- September)

  • Evaluate the apron usage
  • Collect feedback from shopkeepers
  • Adjustment
  • Add on automated self-cleaning treatment
  • Silk-screen printing the shop name

Aprons Design & Technology applied

  1. Self- cleaning
Automated self-cleaning treatment is activated by light on fabric of nanotechnology.
  2. 4-in 1 multi-functional fabric
    4 in 1 multi-functional fabric is waterproof, greaseproof, stain-free and wrinkle-free.

Technology applied: Self-cleaning technology

Hoi Lin
Aprons are frequently washed but the fabric is too thick to wind dry quickly; Thin cotton is adopted for fast drying yet the user thinks it is not greaseproof. Further adjustment - outer layer is detachable for cleaning; both layers are made of thicker cotton to enhance greaseproof quality.

Kwok Kee
Shopkeeper prefers denim; designer advises that denim contains chemical toxin which is not ideal to have direct contact with meat; inner layer is made of denim to respect his preference whilst the outer layer is made of Thick cotton for cleaning and food safety.

After examining the practical use, both aprons use cross back strap design to reduce the burden on shoulders and necks.

Design: 4-in-1 multi-functional apron
Technology applied: 4-in-1 multi-functional fabric

Liu Chan Kee (tofu shop)
Phase 1: Apron made of 4-in-1 multi-functional fabric; ankle length for wet environment; the strap was refined to Y back straps to even out the burden on shoulders and neck; waist strap made of cotton molds easily, therefore then changed to synthetic fibre.

Fung Kwai (vegetable shop)
Phase 1: Cross back straps; knee length; waterproof fabric for wet environment

Phase 2: Two pockets added upon shopkeeper’s request, one with zipper is a coin pouch, the other open pocket is for carrying a small knife

Ming Kee (fish shop)
Frequently exposed to water, blood and fish scales, the existing apron is washed instantly by splashing; 4-in-1 multi-functional treatment is applied, ankle length, Y back strap. Soft fabric becomes sticky after splashing and absorbs water in the skirt. Pointed fins would cut through the fabric. Exploring another fabric with HKRITA at the moment.
